Yorkshire’s award winning Bookshop with a large café, plus garden
We are an independent, award winning bookshop, spread over 2 floors, with large café and unique garden terrace. Our friendly team can guide you to the perfect read to suit your needs. Our café staff are Barista trained, so we guarantee you a great coffee plus we source fantastic Yorkshire produce or bake in-house.

You are assured a warm greeting and we provide friendly customer service, in the unique setting of our vibrant Book Cafe. Sit indoors or in our unique Tea Garden (weather permitting!) for a light lunch or coffee catch-up. Local seasonal produce is key to our menu and we support many local award-winning suppliers to bring you the very best from Yorkshire! After delicious treats, you can browse our individually selected range of cards, gifts, games & toys.

Our Yorkshire Story
Set in the heart of Yorkshire, we’re a family business. Sue Lake and her late father Steve Clements opened the shop in October 1995. Sue’s sister, Caroline soon joined them, along with a great Book Cafe team. We’re situated in Thirsk, the town made famous by the popular vet James Herriot & latterly Channel 5’s series ‘The Yorkshire Vet’. So naturally we stock the original James Herriot books, which we grew up with and love, and we hold signed copies of titles by Julian Norton and Peter Wright who regularly call in.

Families Welcome
Families welcome – Once it is safe to do so, you can discover our lovely Story room upstairs, with comfy sofa, books, a large blackboard, and a selection of children’s books. In our Café we provide a children’s menu, highchairs, & have a baby changing mat in the WC. The garden area has a playhouse (currently not in use due to Covid-19) and large grassed area. Disclaimer: Some high touch items have been removed due to Covid-19.
